Excellence Unique supports the sterling work of the Kimberley South Rotary Club. Why not join us on 16 August 2008 for the annual Wheelchair Race, a 10 km relay race for able-bodied people which starts at the Pick 'n Pay Family Supermarket at Rhodesdene and finishes at Shell Ultra-City on the N12.

The aim of the race is to help to eradicate misconceptions about the capacity and astuteness of people with mobility impairments in order to encourage an attitude of camaraderie, inclusiveness and tolerance towards them. It is being organised by the Quadriplegic Association of the Northern Cape.

The Quadriplegic Association was established in 2003 under the auspices of the QuadPara Association of South Africa. The inaugural wheelchair race in 2006 visibly demonstrated the positive consequence of social interaction and the 2008 race promises to be great fun. This year there will also be a 5 km and 10 km fun walk. All funds generated will be used to address the ever-increasing need for assistive devices such as power wheelchairs, lightweight aluminium wheelchairs, transfer hoists, standing wheelchairs and pressure care products.

In the wheelchair race each team member will push another team member for a distance of two kilometres to a relay/water point after which the team members will change over and the member sitting in the chair will push the other until the next relay point. This will continue till the race is over.

A maximum of 20 teams of six members each from will compete against each other and each team will contribute a R3, 000 entrance fee. Teams from all sectors are invited - Government departments, the private sector, schools, social groups and other organisations. The entrance fee for the fun walk will be R10 for scholars and R20 for adults.
